JAMES E. ENGLISH,
Governor of the State of Connecticut,
A PROCLAMATION.

In compliance with the religious sentiment of our people, as well as in recog-nition of our dependence upon Almighty God, I do hereby appoint FRIDAY THE SEVENTH DAY OF APRIL NEXT, to be observed as a day of FASTING, HUMILIA-TION AND PRAYER.

And I invite the people of every religious denomination in the State, to abstain on that day from all secular employments, and, assembling in their accustomed places of Divine worship, devoutly to make supplication unto the Lord our God, that He will not deal with us after our sins, nor reward us according to our iniquities, but graciously remember us in the abundance of His loving kindness and tender mercies. And let us so sanctify unto ourselves a fast, and so walk in the light of the Divine teaching, that our hearts may confidently exclaim with the Psalmist: "As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us."

GIVEN under my hand and the seal of the State, at New Haven, this twentieth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one, and of the Independence of the United States the ninety-fifth.
