To His Excellency A. Ames, Governor of said State. The undersigned, citizens of said County & state, beg leave to represent in good faith and without regard to party feeling, color, race or previous conditions that we have been pained and sorrowed by and at the late strife in the said County between A. T. Morgan & F. P. Hilliard touching the office of Sheriff of said County, in which Hilliard was killed. We refer you to the evidence taken and reported on said trial, and here present, it, which is substantially true and correct. That the case has been fully examined and adjudicated on habeas corpus by a good and able man, to wit Judge W A Drennan, chancellor of this, 12 Ch. Dist. Miss. with long and patient care, indulgencies and graces, and who is no partizan in our opinion and by his judgement A. T. Morgan was & is not entitled to bail in the premises. We have further to state that there is not any personal feeling or political cast on our part in this case against A. T. Morgan in this case or matter, nor in favor of the deceased, and we mean and intend to act and aid only in support of the right upon the law and its just enforcement, fall where it may, and that none are too great or small to require or receive its just and due enforcement and administration and that you will act upon the same high & true basis. We have learned that a pardon before and by you is sought by A. T. Morgan or for him, and that you have so far declined to yield to that wish or its Execution. In this state of the case, being in the midst of this whole affair

and familiar with the preludes and final facts, we thank you so far for your firmness and sense of duty and propriety in declining pardon, we donot believe that Co^l Morgan is entitled to pardon, but to protection and due safety from wrong and a fair and generous and honest trial—To this end we will give him and you our earnest labor & and support and do all that becomes & is due from good citizens in the premises, but we do protest and earnestly pray against pardon for said Morgan, now, if ever, and pledge you our decided support and even gratitude, should you leave this matter to the Courts—to finally determine, and as in duty bound will ever pray & c.

nothing or cost nothing, they spend as much on these errands as the newspa-per would cost, and then get it at sec-ondhand, after their neighbors are in possession of the news; or, having it at such times only as they can get it, can-not choose the opportunity to read it, and must therefore be supposed to waste a good deal more than its cost in this way.

A good newspaper is of almost ines-timable benefit to a family. It excites the attention and the curiosity of the young as well as older people, in the passing history of the world, and leads to the acquirement of that varied infor-mation which makes the intelligent man or woman. All this the newspaper bor-rower, in great part sacrifices, in order that he may save three cents a day at the disquiet of his neighbors."—Ex.

A Strange Case of Somnambalism.

Mrs. James Riley, of New Haven, who wandered away from her home in her night clothes, on Sunday night, was found by a policeman, at 8 o'clock on Monday evening, leaning over the railing of the east Chapel street bridge. Besides her scanty clothing she wore a pair of rubber boots. When she had sufficiently recovered she said she must have been asleep, as she does not re-member leaving the house. She crawl-ed beneath the draw-bridge and lay all day upon a beam 15 inches wide, while the dark waters of Mill river ran but a few feet beneath her. Once dur-ing the day she remembered having her senses. Then she heard footsteps and voices saying Jim Riley's wife was being sought for. Some spell that could not be broken impelled her to silence Foot and hand prints were found in the snow on the timbers of the draw-bridge, where she had climbed down and crawled in beneath, and prints were also found where she had crawled out on the opposite side of the draw. The place where she remained all day she could hardly have retained in her right mind. Her wanderings are at-tributed to a sudden and strange attack of somnambulism.

Undergrond Fire in Arkansas.

The Watervillle Telegraph has an ac-count of a fire which has broken out in a gully about four miles northeast of Haddam, Washington county, and has continued, apparently in the same spot, for three weeks. A destructive prairie fire swept over that locality sometime ago, and after days had passed and the occurrence was nearly forgotten, smoke was observed emerging from the gully. This excited the curiosity of the scien-tific ones, and an investigation was made, when it was discovered that the smoke issued from a crevice in a large stone embedded in the side of the gully. Some of the wise ones declared it a bed of coal on fire, as there are indications of coal in that vicinity. But the smoke does not smell like that of coal. It is a clear smoke, and ascends in large and steady volumes, and floats off over the surrounding country There are in-dications of an immense fire beneath the surface of the earth, and much alarm is felt. At night the fire and smoke stream upward toward the dark empyrean, and the darkness is dispelled for a long distance from the place.

The speech of Gen. Gordon, of Georgia in the Senat a few days since on the sal-ary question was listened to with great attention, especially that portion of it which partook of the nature of a personal explanation, and which referred to the surrender of Lee at Appomattox Mr. Gordon made it ecause he said he had been charged with being influenced by personal prejudices against the Adminis-tration. He said he was of those who held a command in the Confederate army when it surrendered to Gen. Grant at Ap-pomattox. Until that time he had never known what grief was. The negotiations occupied four days and four nights, and during all that time not one word of ex-ultation escapped the lips of the Federal commaders; in fact they avoided all conversation relative to battles in which the Union armies had been successful and spoke only of those engagements in which they had been defeated. He for one appreciated such magnanimity. It sank deep into his heart, and he mention-ed the fact to prove that he was not per-sonally hostile to President Grant.

After its daily bath lay it on the floor or on a lounge, and let the direct rays of the sun fall on all its body, shielding the eyes from the excessive light. These sun baths are excellent for invalids and for well people also. The sunniest room in the house should be the family room. Open the blinds, raise the shades, put back the curtains, and let the glory and health flood all the apartment—never mind if the carpet fades; better a faded carpet than pallid faces and peevish dispositions. No sensible mother dress-es a baby in low neck and short sleeves, unless she is desirous to lay it under the snow before spring; neither does she give it that enemy of babyhood, "soothing syrup."

A singular temptation was thrown in the way of Gov. Hendricks, of Indiana, a few days since, and nobly resisted. One Galven, an attorney of Tipton, carried away by the excitement of the October election in 1872, backed his faith in Hendricks with a wager of considerable magnitude, and scooped it in. Some mean-spirited, low down cuss procured his indictment by the grand jury, and he was fined $100. A few days ago he made application to the Governor to have his fine remitted. Here was a predicament for his Excellency. His feelings prompted him to be lenient to a personal and political friend who had manifested so sublime a confidence in the popularity of his Excellency. On the other hand there was the law—the red eyed law—also a fear that his enemies would charge that he had remitted the fine simply because the man bet on him. Thomas considered the matter, and finally wrote to Mr. Galven that as he had won the bet, he had better pay the fine.

THE New York Chamber of Com-merce Thursday, adopted a memorial to Congress, representing that the re-peal of the existing bankrubt laws would be highly detrimental to all class-es of the mercantile community, and that the law had better be amended in some important particulars. The memorial reccommended that a large pro-portion of creditors be required to place a debtor in bankruptcy, that the prop-erty of the bedtors be better secured to the creditors, and that stringent pro-visions be adopted to avoid the delays of the law and the great expenses at-tending, which are prejudicial to both debtors and creditors. Resolutions were adopted, condemning the present revenue law.

The Little Fight in Spain

LONDON, Jan. 12.—A special dispatch from Madrid to the Times says that Gen. Domingener, commanding the forces beseiging Cartagena, has telegraphed that his command has compelled Attal-laya Castle to surrender, and that he has surrounded the other forts of the city.

A telegram to the Standard from the vicinity of Cartagena gives a rumor that another magazine exploded within the walls on Saturday, and 250 persons were killed.

The expected capture of Attallaya Castle will lead to speedy capitulation.

BAYONNE, Jan. 12—The Carlists have csptured three companies of Re-publican troops without bloodshed.

PLAYIN$ BILLIARDS WITH HIS NOSE.

An American has come forward with a fresh notion, which may entirely rev-olutionize the world of billiards. This gifted person flings away the time hon-ored one and undertakes to conquer his opponents by simply substituting his nose in its place. In a report of a match played with Dutton the other day, we read: "His modus operandi is very sim-ple. Dutton plays a break with the cue in the usual way, and as soon as he leaves off Jefferson bends over the table, taps the ball with his nose, and rolls it into a pocket or caroms from it on the other ball." There are undoubt-edly some advantages in thus dispens-ing with the cue. The player, we pre-sume, is not obliged to chalk his nose.—London Daily News.

A Father's Advice to a Bride.

Said a young husband whose busi-ness speculations were unsuccessful: "My wife's silver tea set, the bridal gift of a rich uncle doomed me to financial ruin. It involved a hundred unexpect-ed expenses, which, in trying to meet, have made me the bankrupt I am."

His experience is the experience of many others, who, less wise, do not know what is the goblin of the house, working its destruction. A sagacious father, of great wealth, exceedingly mortified his daughter by ordering it to be printed on her wedding cards—"No presents, except those adapted to an income of $1000. Said he, "You must not expect to begin life in the style I am able, by many years of labor to indulge; and I know of nothing which will tempt you to try more than the well intentioned but pernicious gifts of rich friends." Such advice is timely. If other parents would follow the same plan, many young men would be spared years of incessant toil and anxiety ; they would not find themsel-ves on the downward road, because their wives had worn all of their salary, or expended it on the appointment of the house. The fate of the poor man who found a linch-pin, and felt obliged to make a carriage to fit it, is the fate of the husband who finds his bride in possession of gold and silver valuables, and no large income to support the owner's gold and silver style.

WHAT A FEW SHORT YEARS BRING ABOUT.—It was in the month of De-cember, in the year 1861, that the French expedition to Mexico, subse-quentyly commanded by Gen. Bazaine, landed at Vera Cruz. In the brief pe-riod of twelve years, since elapsed, what lamentable facts have overwhelmed four of the principal characters who figured prominently in that disastrous episode. Maximilian was most cruelly executed; his unfortunate widow, "Carlotta," went mad; Napoleon III, lost his own empire and died an exile; and now Marshal Bazaine, degraded of his illustrious rank, and condemned o imprisonment, only escapes execution through the clemency of the president of the Repub-lic.
