Maternal Association of Summit.

At a special meeting of the Ma-ternal Association of Summit, Miss., convened May 20, 1874, the follow-ing preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted:

Whereas, We believe that God has heard the supplications that have gone up to Him from the an-guised hearts of wives, mothers and sisters, for the rescue of the poor misguided victims of intemperance; therefore

Resolved, That we take this meth-od of expressing our gratitude to God, and our heartfelt thanks to Gov. Ames for the decided interest he has evinced in the cause of Tem-perance, in the suppression of the sale of ardent spirits throughout our State.

Resolved, That we believe that woman's prayers, measureless with eloquent grief, have pierced the Heavens, and God in answer to her prayers, has placed it within her power, by the late legislative en-actment, to drive from our borders the liquor traffic, and force the seller of intoxicating drinks to engage in more honorable employment.

Resolved, That the members of this Association pledge themselves to plead mightily to God in this our time of need—to do what our hands find to do with our might, as the Father Almighty shall direct; to work on even amid the shadows un-til the day dawns.

As Governor of our State, this As-sociation earnestly entreats you for the welfare of our country, to rig-orously urge onward the total ab-stinence movement under the guid-ance of God. And should you with His blessing prosecute the move-ment to success, you will call down manifold blessings on the defence-less, shelterless ones, whose wrongs cry out to Heaven like the blood of the martyr.

Dear Sir

The Revd W^m Hoover has in-formed me that he is an applicant for the situation of Superintendent of Public Schools of this County.—Mr Hoover is a Gentleman of high standing, fine attainments & unblemished character & his appointment would give tone & character to the ~~appointment~~ position—Mr Hoover's Father Judge Hoover, now dead, was an original Union-man & had boldness & independence to use his influence to prevent Secession.—He was one of the wealthiest as well as most estimable & influencial men in the County.—Pardon me for suggesting that it is of much political importance that the Republican Party should draw men like Mr MHoover to its support.—While Mr Hoover is a minister of the Gospel, he is free from sectarianism & liberal in his views.—I know of no man in the County whose appointment would be more judicious

than his & which would bring more strength to your party & benefit to Public Education. & I hope you will find it compatible with your views to give his claims the aid of your deservedly great popularity
