Dear Sir

I have the honor respect-fully to call your attention to, the enclosed letter of Governor Adelbert Ames of Mississippi, in reference to Col G Wiley Wells who is now, or soon will be, an applicant for reappointment to be District Attorney for the United States for the Northern District of Mississippi

In this letter Governor Ames makes charges against Col Wells, which if sustained, show him to be unfit to hold the position to which he aspires. I have notified Gov-ernor Ames that it will be nec-essary for him to furnish proofs, which he states he is "prepared to do if need be",—In view of the foregoing I respectfully ask that no action be taken looking to the reappointment of Col Wells until the charges can be fully investigated.
