Dear Sir

You may be somewhat sur-prised, at receiving, this letter from an utter stranger. But the importance of the subject, is the only apology I have to offer, &, as I am rather a poor hand, at apolo-gies: I will to the point. I am one of a Company of four that own a deposit of silica in Tishomingo County Miss—& perhaps I speak within the bounds of reason, when I say the finest, & most extensive in the world: Nevertheless, I believe fully what I say, & refer you for confirmation, to the Geological reports of Professors Harper & Hilgard, which you will find, in the State library at Jackson: My or rather, our desire, is to develop this deposit. We have neither money or influence, & we wish to found an association, with some one, that has both, for the purpose of developing, it, to its fullest capacity: Believing, as we do, that it is worth millions, if we can get some one of Capital & influence to join us: in the enterprise, & hoping that you may view it in the light, that I do. You may get your father-in law, Senator Butler to join you, (or us) in the enterprise: & not only benefit us, but benefit Mississippi in partially developing her immense

mineral resources, I will be frank with you, & say to you, I was, in correspondence with Senator Spra-gue, of Rhode Island, upon this subject, & I hoped from the tenor of his letters, that he was going to take "holt" of it, & join me, but about that time, the Country was overwhelmed with the panic, & you know the result: to the Messrs Sprague, Should the subject meet with your favorable consideration, we would be pleased to have you, become one of the Company: for the future development of the mine: Either to estab-lish a factory, or sell it to others: We would be more than willing, to give you an equal interest with us, to have you take holt of it, & aid us in its development: The Company and, M,, B,, Lamb of Yazoo County: Col John Robinson, of Madison County Miss—& Charles C,, Moore Miss—City & myself, W,, S,, G,, Walker, M,, D,, near Canton Madison Co Miss—Hoping Govoner, you may view it in the same light that I do, & you may also conclude to join us in the enterprise, I remain
