To his Excellency Adelbert Ames
Governor of the State of Mississippi—

Your Petitioners citizens of Itawamba County Mississippi would respectfully represent and show unto your Excellency—

That at the August Term of the Circuit Court of Said County 1874 came in ^to be^ Tried the Case of The State vs Miles Barclay—the same being on Indictment for unlawful Retailing Spiritous Liquors ^an_d Thereupon the said Miles Barclay appeared ^an_d Plead Guilty to the said Indictment—^an_d left his case to the Leniency of the Court—^an_d Therupon the Court imposed a fine of ($25⁰⁰) Twenty five Dollars—on the said Miles Barclay—the said fine being the lowest penalty provided by the Statute for said Offense

Petitioners further show unto your Excellency That the said Miles Barclay is now ^an_d was at the time of Committing said offense—almost entirely blind—T That the said Barclay is in extremely

adverse circumstances, and could not perform the manual Labor necessary for his support and maintenance—

That the said Miles Barclay represents unto Your Petitioners That he sold the said Spiritous Liquors for the sole purpose of raising money to pay an occulist to operate upon his eyes, and with no desire or intention to evade the Law

Petitioners Therefore ask your Excellency to consider the circumstances of this Case and pray that you grant the said Miles Barclay a Pardon for the said unlawful Retailing—believing that Your Excellency will Thereby greatly relieve a distressed citizen—

And your Petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray &c

To the Sheriff of Itawamba County

Greeting:

Whereas, at the August Term, 1874, of the Circuit Court of Itawamba County, in said State, Miles Barclay was convicted of the crime of Retailing Spiritous Liquors, and by the Court sentenced to pay a fine of Twenty five dollars, $25.⁰⁰

Now, Therefore, I, A. K. Davis Lieut Gov Actg Governor of the State of Mississippi, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of said State, and for divers good and sufficient reasons, me, thereto moving, do grant unto the said Miles Barclay a full pardon for said crime of Retailing Spiritous Liquors and do authorize and direct you, on receipt of these presents, to ~~release him from confinement~~^remit said fine^.
