Dear Sir

I sent from the County in which I reside viz Benton Co. petitions from citizens of that County to Gov. Ames asking him to relieve some 23 colored people from a judgment which was rendered against them as bondsmen for one Paul Eckford who stood indicted in that Co. As Gov Ames is out of the state I presume that you are at present acting Gov. and hope that you will direct your attention to the petitions immediately and if you can consistently do so render them the relief prayed for. The petitioners are in great distress and unless

prompt action is had their property will be sold by the Sheriff and they deprived of the means of support. Please answer at this place

In the Case of the State of Mississippi V^s Monroe Palmerton on an indictment by the Grand Jury of Montgomery County Charging him with Slander being called at the December Term of the Circuit Court of Said County and the Defend-ant failing to answer a forfeiture was taken against him and his surety Curtis Morehead on their recognizance for the Sum of two Hundred Dollars

On the following day Monroe Palmerton appeared in court and Stated to the Court that the reason why he failed to appear was that he was thrown by his mule on his way to Court & being hurt and his mule getting away from him it was impossible for him to be pres-ent when the Case was Called Whereupon the Court ~~orders~~^Stated^ that the forfeiture might be set aside & can be continued upon the Defendant paying all the Cost accrued thereon up to that time. The Defend-ant failing to pay the Cost before the ad-journment of the Court there was no order Entered upon the Minutes Setting aside the forfeiture These are substantially the facts in this case
