Oxford, Sept. 29^th. 1874.

To His Excellency, Gov. Ames,

Dear Sir:

Enclosed we send you a petition for the par-don of one Ned Spearman, who was convicted of Ma-licious Mischief before Hon. J. M. Phipps, J. P.—You will see that besides our signature, the Judge has sign-ed it; & he is a lawyer of well-known intelligence & candor. We have sought no other signatures, deeming them unnecessary.

If your Excellency grants the pardon, please send it to us by Monday 5^th next, as the negro's appeal will come up for hearing on Tuesday.

To his Excellency A. Ames, Governor, &c.,

Dear Sir:

Your letter of yesterday inquiring into the present status of Ned Spearman's case, con-cerning which we wrote you on 9^th^Sept.^ received to-day.

Spearman was convicted before the magistrate, & fined. He did not have the money to pay the fine, & probably never will have so much. To keep him from going to jail, until we could apply to you, we took an appeal for him to the Circuit Court, where the case now is, on his appeal.

Hoping to hear from you soon, & favorably to this poor negro, we are
