Sir,

I have the honor to reply to yours of this date as follows, viz—

Assessed valuation of real property [image: ellispes]	139,596,801

	$223.410.920
State Indebtedness January 16^th 1874 since which date no statement has been completed [image: ellipses]	$2.384.336.33.

No special tax is levied to meet Bonds & Interest. Two per cent of the Bonds issued and an amount sufficient to meet interest is annually set apart from the general funds—provision already made to cover all interest as it falls due.

Yearly expenses of the Government estimated at 1.500.000.00.

Tax to meet the same as follows—1/2% on the valuations Poll tax of $1.00 on all males between the ages of 21. & 60 years, say $170.000.00, and license tax for pursueing occupations say $250.000.00.

The assessment of $223.410.920 is taken from the rolls of

1873—the rolls now coming in for the present year show an increase of at least ten per cent which—to-gether with about seventeen millions of real property which has heretofore excaped taxation will bring the taxable property of the State to—say—$260.000.000. which is increasing yearly.

The debt statement of the present year is not yet com-plete hence I have used the figures given in my re-port of January last which will not be very materially changed.
