Natchez May 12^th.. 1875

Dear Sir

Geo. Wolfork a Colered man is in the Peneteniary. He was sent from Adams Co about 15 or 20 Month since he was sent for Mule Steeling. I have no dout he is Inocent, a Negro owed him some money Wolfork called on him for payment, a quarrel insued. The Debtor soon after sent his Mule to one of his Neighbours, telling him to claim the Mule as his own & offer it to Wolfork to taake it to Natchez &Sell it for him. Wolfork suspecting nothing wrong took the Mule to Town and offeredtoSell it, his debtor (an Enemy) was on the watch and had him arested & his accomplice made Oath That Wolfork Stole the Mule from his staeble Wolfork worked one year on my place I found him truthfull & Industerous. I made inquire about his antecedants soon after his conviction & he was reported a correct & reliable man, his wife & children are on my place, and greatly need the Fathers help, as his wife cant leave the young children long at a time to work in the fields.

I verily believe him Inocent & would respectfully as you to let him out so that he may return to his family.

I would have sent you a petition soon after his Conviction but was told it was a rule with you to Pardon none until at least half the term for wich they have sent had expered

Mr Noonan & Mr McRea both conected with the management of the Penitentiary know me, and will I think satisfy you that I would not knowingly make a statement void of truth

I have Known the within named J. S. Coulson for upwards of ten years as a good citizen and reliable man. A petition was forwarded to the Governor in behalf of the prisoner Woodford some time ago Signed by a number of reliable citizens of Adams County and many of the County officials. The prisoner was convicted at the Jany. 1874 Special term of the Adams Circuit Court of grand larceny and sentenced to 3 years his record here is first class in every respect
