The undersigned, citizens of Hinds County Miss, respectfully represent unto your Excellency;

That one, Boss Clardy was indicted by the Circuit ^Court^ of the 1^st District of Hinds County Miss, atat the Oct. Term thereof, A. D. 1869, for the murder of one Dick Greer on the [gap] day of Oct. 1869; that at the Oct. Term 1870, said cause was tried and the Jury failed to agree upon a verdict; that at the Jany Term 1871 said cause was again tried, and a verdict of "guilty" rendered & judgment entered then upon—Said defendant was sentenced to be hanged, which sentence was subsequently commuted by Executive author-ity, to imprisionment for life—

We respectfully submit that the evidence in said cause, for and against the prisoner was very conflicting and presented a grave doubt, to say the least of it, of ^the^ justice of said verdict. The provocation by deceased against the defendant was great, indeed—besides which it was in evidence that deceased threatened the life of defendant—

Under all the circumstances connected with the case, we respectfully urge that the majesty of the law has been in this case suffi-ciently vindicated and that the party has paid already a severe penalty for his indiscretion, by the already protracted term of his imprisonment.

The premisis considered we most respectfully invoke further Executive clemency

in behalf of said Boss Clardy and ask your Excellency to pardon him the crime of which he has been convicted and for which he is now paying the penalty in the State Penitentiary hoping and believing that he will make a good and useful citizen.

Boss Clardy,

Up to the time of his imprisonment was always, strictly speaking, a good boy; His being the first serious misdem-eanor of which he was ever guilty. I am con-vinced that the punish-ment he has received by imprisionment will besufficient to induce him to amend his conduct in the future.

Boss Clarida was convicted and sentenced to death, but death sentence was commuted to imprisonment for Life in the Penitentiary, he has served here since July 9^th 1872.
