To his Excellency Adelbert Ames, Governor of the State of Mississippi
Jackson, Miss.

Dear Sir:

I herewith inclose you a Petition numerously, and cheerfully, signed by good and worthy citizens of both colors, in this portion of the County, asking the exercise of special Executive clemency in behalf of Corne-lius Calverts, who was born and reared in this isolated village; I drew the accompanying Petition and, as stated therein, defended the young man in his trial before the Circuit Court at Port Gibson, in Claiborne County, and have all the while labored under the conviction that the boy was not actuated by any criminal intent, and that the owner of the horse, as well as his colaborer or partner, the only State witnesses, were actuated by a spirit of spite and revenge, begotten of their unwillingness for Cornelius to quit their employ and service, and I really think the case is one deserving your favorable consideration.
