To Adelbert Ames Governor

Your Excellency

I beg to report to you the following state of facts relative to the political condition of affairs ^in^ & about Whites Box Precinct in Yazoo County: I live in the Whites Box precinct of Yazoo Co. Miss Am a registered voter in said precincts. I am secretary of the Republican club of that precinct. On Wednesday the 14th Oct. Inst. I was informed by friends that persons belonging to Capt. Sam. Griffin's company of armed White men of Whites Box precinct had threatened my life and I ought to leave that Jacob Sidney, J. W. Longstreet, and Buck Redit had also been threatened their lives. Longstreet was chairman of our club. I remained at home until Monday 19th Inst. When I was informed ¹⁰⁹ that Jacob Sidney had been shot. I then took to the woods. On Saturday following I returned to a place near my house where I met with my wife who informed me that Frank Hinson and other White men armed had been to my house searching for me and I had best not come home that night I slept in a Cotton crib on the place.

¹¹⁰ During the night an armed crowd of white men came to my house and enquired for me. Not finding me they went to Webig Gordon's house and there enquired for me In the morning I left the County for Jackson

Archie Johnson had been threatened his life I was informed before leaving. I desire to state that I was further informed before leaving that on Wednesday night after the killing of Sidney, nearly all of the colored men of the precinct slept out of their homes.

A reign of Terror exists in that portion of the county owing to the killing of men ¹¹¹ in that county and the demonstrations made by armed companies of White men marching about which will prevent the people turning out to vote. and I believe is done for that purpose.

I arrived at Jackson on Monday Morning 25th Inst.

In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my seal and attach my signature at office at Jackson this 28th day of October A. D. 1875
