Mass meeting of the ~~citizens~~ ^Republicans^ of Hinds madison & Rankin Counties—held at the Capit Oct 30 1875 On Motion of Capt Green Tapley was elected Chairman & N D Sneed Secretary after a few preliminary remarks by the chair Hon Jas Hill Republican candidate for congress was introduced to the meeting He delivered one of His usually impressive speeches and was followed by H T Fisher and D F Crawford Esq The following resolutions was introduced and unanimously ~~adopted~~ agreed to and on motion of N D Sneed H T Fisher Lewis Beachum G^en M W Dederick and Julius Allen were appointed a comittee to ^{Folio I} present the same to His excellency Governor Ames—Whereas a general election is to be held in this state on Tuesday next 2^nd day of November at which time the political control & Destiny of Mississippi is to be decided by the Qualified voters thereof speaking through

the ballot box and—Whereas both of the great political parties batteling for the ascendancy regard as vital the descision which will then be rendered in determining a state policy and Whereas the theory of the Democratic party the spirit of its press the speeches of its public ^{Folio II} speakers and all its practices as an organization are in open hostility to the rights guarenteed by the Fourteenth & fifteenth amand-ments and have forced upon the republicans of mississipi anew the contest for the maintenance of of these fundamental ^Republican^ principles and whereas these principles are assailed by all the combined power of the Democratic party

Republicans meetings threatened or broken up free speech & freedom of political action denied Repub-lican voters intimidated terrorized by threats of violence and in many instances driven from their houses & families for safety or murdered for their political convictions and ^{Folio III} influence The laws of the state and the nation held in defiance & contempt withe no adequate power

at command ^to secure^ their enforcement and Whereas the peace agreement entered into between the Governor of the state and the Comittee of democratic citizens has not stayed the hands of violence nor checked the wicked practices of the Democracy in their assault upon the rights of Republican freemen and there is no evedence that it has ever been regarded as bind-ing by any of the opposition except those few who were person-ally pledged to its obligations and Whereas these open an defiant ^{Folio IV} practices are subversers of peace a menace to free institutions a gross violation of sacred personal & political rights and calculated to produce distrust between the two races where harmony & mutual confidence should exist and are a disgrace to the boasted civilization & Freedom of the nation whose name is the synonym of personal & political security liberty & equality

Therefore Resolved First That

we announce all such agencies for controlling voters an carrying the election as flagrant violations of the law outrages upon the sacred rights & Liberties of free men disgracefull to the hitherto proud name of Democracy ^{Folio V} and a foul blot upon the honor and good name of Mississippi

Resolved Second That we renew our pledges for peace and good will and to secure so far as tis in our power a fair and free elect-ion That we will countanance no violation of law or interference withe the rights of ~~others~~ any one and that we will use our best endeavor to maintain quiet on Election day. Resolved Thrd that a copy of these resolutions be transmitted to his excellency Gov Ames and be printed in The daily times & Pilot
