TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

A PROCLAMATION OF THANKSGIVING.

THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA,
Executive Chamber.

BY an appropriate custom, now widely observed, the close of the harvest season of the year is marked by a day set apart for the service of thanksgiving and praise. In observance of this custom I hereby designate

THURSDAY, the 25th day of NOVEMBER, instant,

as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise throughout this State. On that day let us all recall and recognize the blessings which Divine Providence has granted us during the past year—the blessings of peace, of large material prosperity, of increasing harmony and good will among our people, of progress towards good government, of a greater desire for purity and integrity in public and private relations, and of a more intelligent and earnest endeavor to make ourselves worthy of the heritage of civil and religious freedom which we have received from our fathers. Let us likewise, with devout hearts, implore the continuance of present blessings, and especially that we may be inspired and aided to go forward in the discharge of all our individual and social and public duties in humble dependence on Divine favor to reward our efforts with mercies which shall enrich our temporal and spiritual estates.
