I have the honor to transmit herewith a petition for the pardon of Hector Singleterry who was convicted of grand larceny at the Nov^r Term of the Circuit Court of this county, sentenced to one years imprisonment in the penitentiary.

I beg leave to say further that I acted as council for Hector and that while the testimony agst his brother was conclusive it is reasonable to believe his brother's affidavit that Hector was innocent. The affidavit ac-companies the petition. I learn too that Hector's standing is very good & that his past character tends to negative the idea of his guilt. Should your Excellency desire to examine the testimony it is all in writing in the shape of a bill of exceptions & can be forwarded.

To His Excellency, The Hon'l A. Ames Governor of the State of Mississippi:—

The petition of the undersigned Citizens of said County would respectfully represent unto your Excellency that they have known Hector Singleterry of said County (who was convicted of larceny at the Nov^r Term of the Circuit Court of said County and sentenced to one years imprisonment in the penitentiary) for a number of years, That during all that time he has borne a steady and excellent reputation for honesty, sobriety, and industry.—That he is the father of a large family who depend upon him, and is also the pastor of a large congregation of his people who have the greatest love and respect for him.

That said Hector was convicted upon circum-stantial evidence and that your petitioners have become satisfied from the sworn statement of his brother Samuel that he was really innocent of the crime whereof he stands convicted.

In consideration of the previous, Petitioners respectfully pray that your Excellency will grant a full pardon to said Hector Singleterry, and thereby restore him

to his family, friends, and congregation, and to the community. And petitioners further pray that—unless your Excellency shall see proper to act upon this petition at once, which would best meet their wishes—The same may be referred to the Hon'l C. C. Shackleford, Judge, and the Hon'l C. W. Clark, District attorney; who they feel assured will second this application for executive clemency.

I A. P. Ferguson hereby certify that Hect. Singleterry has lived on my plantation in said County for more than two years and that during that time he has borne a good reputation for honesty and industry. And I am now satisfied after the sworn statement of his brother Sam. that although there were just suspicion a-gainst ^him^ in reference to the cow-stealing of which he was convicd with Sam, that he was really innocent.

In my judgment should the exec-utive interfere with a pardon to save Hector Singleterry from the penitentiary it will be a most righteous exercise of clemency—and one that will meet the wishes of the Community.
