To His Excellency Adelbert Ames Governor of the State of Mississippi

The undersigned would resp-ectfully represent to your Excellency that at the last April Term A D 1875 of the circuit court of Harrison County Col John O Nixon was tried and convicted of Retailing Vinous and spirituous ^Liquors^ without license. That said conviction was had after the said Nixon had procured the requisite number of signers to his petition addr-essed to the Board of Supervisors of said county praying the grant of such license to him which petition was regularly acted upon and said License granted to Said Nixon upon his complying with the Statute in this behalf. That upon this action the said Nixon having just domiciliated himself in this State and not being aware that it was his duty to go forward execute his Bond and pay the amount demanded for said license, but supposing that whenever the officer whose duty it was to collect said sum should demand that amount he would be not a transgressor of the law in this behalf if he should then pay the same, acting in good faith under this false impression, and in accordance with the custom of the State whence he lately came, he failed to pay the amount of his license, and was indicted therefor and fined in the sum of Two Hundred Dollars & costs of suit. All these facts considered and under the

belief that the said Nixon intended no breach or evasion of the law, we here-by pray your excell-ency to pardon the said Nixon for this unintentional offence against the laws of the said state, and to remit his said fine as aforesaid and your petitioners will as in duty bound ever pray &c

I returned from the Hot Springs on the 28^th_" Nov & on the 29 obtained the signature to the enclosed petition. The next day I was laid up with an attack of Rheumatic Gout & have been confined to my room since. Not having the use of my right hand I was unable to write to you which will account to you for my delay in forwading the enclosed.
May I indulge the hope that your Excellency will look favorably on my application.
