At the October Term 1875 of the Circuit Court of Sumner—County Tobe Brown a colored boy about 16 years of age was convicted of an assault and Battery with intent to kill and murder and was sentenced to one years imprisonment in the State Penitentiary I write to ascertain if you will entertain a Petition for his pardon as he is the only support of an aged Mother with a large family of helpless children I have carried his case up to the Supreme Court but he is poor and without friends able to assist him in carrying his case through at the time of his trial it being just before the Election political excitiment was very high here and a hard matter for a colored person to have got a fair and impartial trial I think I can get you a Petition signed by a large majority of the best citizens of all parties in this country I am not insensible of the fact that there is a great Clamor against the pardoning power

but as you know there never has been a pardon granted for any one in this section of the Country and I am satisfied that I can present a case that is entitled to Executive Clemency an early reply to this will confer a great favor to a poor helpless boy and also to your Obedient Servant
