WASHINGTON LETTER.

From Our Special Correspondent.

WASHINGTON, March 16.

About the only tangible evidences of injuries done by the "Belknap af-fair," which caused so many tried Re-publicans to cry out that the party was ruined, are the corpses of two or three Presidential candidates, which the fury of this storm has left exposed in all their rigid stiffness on the field of its recent devastation.

Knowing the sincere admiration which the TIMES has always felt and frequently expressed for President Grant, it is with reluctance that I must chronicle the fact that this un-fortunate affair has left visible noth-ing, but the ghost of the Third Term, which, at one time, reached a very ro-bust and imposing growth. The opinions expressed in this correspon-dence cannot, of course, be regarded in any other light than the sim-ple judgment of your correspondent; and published, even without editorial dissent in the TIMES, they cannot be regarded as in any manner, the au-thoritative expressions of the TIMES itself. It is therefore with the free-dom of personal responsibility alone that I speak of my impressions regard-ing matters which an influential party journal like the TIMES would justly regard as delicate matters for editorial comment. Presidential gossip, wheth-er reliable or not, is considered inter-esting reading, and so as a news cor-respondent I will speak freely of such recent developments in the game of President making as are here the gen-eraly accepted news items of the day.

-didate of mine—the noble "old war Governor of Indiana." Between his demise as a Presidential candidate and Belknap's fall there may seem to be no reasonable ground of connection. It is possible there is more. I am only speaking of the strange coinci-dence of time in the two occasions; viz: the Belknap exposure and the death, or, at least the rapid decline of Mor-ton as a Presidential candidate. No one claims that Morton can be held responsible for Belknap's appointment nor can the disgust which Belknap, has aroused against all public men even suspected of dishonesty, include Morton, because he is universally be-lieved to be honest as a man, as he is a brave and uncompromising as a partisan. Probably the most potent cause of Morton's sudden and un-mistable decline in popularity is the increased sensitiveness to his acknowl-edged faults which this unfortunate blow to the party, in the fall of Belk-nap, has induced. It is undeniable that in quarters where Morton was the choice and the favorite before, we now hear it objected that the faults of his private life will make him objectionable; that his record on the currency question has not been con-sistent, and has been too vacillating to make him strong with either party in the great financial issues of the coming campaign; and finally, most often and most forcibly is it urged that Morton's record has been bril-liant only as a fierce and uncomprom-ising partizan, and that an entirely different record is needed by the Re-publican candidate this year. Re-publican sentiment, as seen here, is now peculiarly sensitive to the injury which the party has suffered, through the dishonesty of many of its trusted servants. It is urged that the assis-tance and the support of the inde-pendent and Conservative voters must be obtained; that party enthus-iasm, such as Morton could arouse, cannot alone carry us through. This is the Centennial year, where under the warmth of rekindling national patriotism, you must grow conservative toward each other, and that Blaine, with a good party record, will be more acceptable to this element than Morton; this is the year of of-ficial corruption and dishonesty, and Bristow has the best reform record of any man in the United States—and day by day, the number seems to in-crease who believe that Blaine or Bristow "will be the man," and that Blaine and Bristow, or Bristow and Blaine would sweep the country with a torrent of enthusiasm.

In Mississippi, Morton probably made many friends by the introduc-tion of his "Mississippi resolutions," and he would have kept them had he

President Washington wrote Mr. Jefferson that he could never have be-lieved that party rancor would go to the extent of abusing him in a way that not even a notorious pick-pocket should deserve. And the Cincinnati Times remarks:

If the Father of Our Country should rise up and read the New York Sun and the Cincinnati Commercial, he would find that the world hasn't changed very much.

Put the money question out of Con-necticut, and she would follow New Hampshire. With four tickets run-ning, however—two regular, one tem-perance, and one rag-baby—no one can forecast the result. The Repub-licans have an unconditional hard money, immediate resumption plat-form, while the Democrats have a trimming plank that means anything or nothing.

He was something of a CLYMER, but the New Hampshire hills were too much for him.

The Democratic organ in Washing-ton begins to see how it is. It says: "It was a grave error to allow the wit-ness, Marsh, to escape, and all the personal explanations gentleman can make will not render it any the less an error."

Pendleton got $80,000 for securing payment, by the government, of the Kentucky Central Railroad claim of $148,000. That beats running for President at one's own expense.—Memphis Avalanche.

TRUST SALE.

By virtue of a certain Trust Deed, dated November 24, 1873, and given by Edward M. Scott to Mrs. Eudora Saughnessy to secure the payment of a certain note of hand given by said Scott to the said Mrs. Shaughnessy, bearing date of November 24, 1873, for the sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars, and payable two years from date of note, with interest at the rate of 10 per centum per annum until paid, said note with the trust deed, for value re-ceived, having been transferred by the said Mrs. Shaughnessy to the undersigned, on May 15th, 1874. Said deed is recorded on page 421, book 4, of Deeds, in the office of the Chancery Clerk of Hinds county, Mississippi, at Jackson, I will on Monday, the 13th day of March, in front of the State House, in the city of Jackson, Mississippi, offer for sale to the highest bidder for cash, the following described real estate, or so much thereof as will be required to satisfy the demands of said note together with the interest thereon, and all costs, to-wit:

Part of the east half of the north east quarter and of the west end of the east half of the south east quarter of section nine (9) township five (5) range one (1) east, ly-ing south of the main branch, running through said tract of land, and embracing lots Nos. 10, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 and 36, situa-ted in the corporate limits of the city of Jackson. Said property will be offered in single lots. The sale will be conducted during legal hours, and unless disposed of during legal hours of said day, it will be continued from day to day until disposed of or until said note shall be satisfied. A plot of the land will be exhibited on day of sale.

-esting reading, and so as a news cor-respondent I will speak freely of such recent developments in the game of President making as are here the gen-eraly accepted news items of the day.

It may not be proper to say that the Third Term has been killed by the Belknap exposure, but rather, what is an undoubted fact, that it died at about this time. It is a wonder that its life should ever have been of robust or of such continued growth, since, as I have in previous correspondence said, it never received one breath or vitality from any desire or aspiration on the part of the man who was to fill the Third Term. The only thing which could have given activity and continuity to the agitation of so novel a proposition, has been the almost un-exampled success, yes, the splendor of President Grant's administration which has extended through seven years of such embarassments and dif-ficulties as never beset the adminis-tration of another American Presi-dent. had it ever received the Presi-dent's approval and encouragement this unfortunate and deplorable fall of a member of the Cabinet, who was pe-culiarly the personal choice of the President, must prove disastrous to its future success; but as it has lived without his encouragement, it has died with his indifference, if not with pos-tive satisfaction and approval on his part.

Roscoe Conkling, as a Presidential condidate, was never considered as anything but a self-constituted ad-junct and prompter of the Third Term scheme—and the same beauty which won for him the title of the "Adonis" of the Senate, rests now up-on his brow in the rigid stillness of death.

Since the passage of this storm over the fiercely fought field where Presi-dential candidates die every day, I have thought I recognized the lifeless remains of another and a favorite can

and Blaine would sweep the country with a torrent of enthusiasm.

In Mississippi, Morton probaby made many friends by the introduc-tion of his "Mississippi resolutions," and he would have kept them had he pressed that resolution to a successful vote, as he might have done at one time. It was encouraging to believe that a man of Morton's ability had in-terested himself actively in behalf of the crushed and wronged party in Mississippi, and it is the greatest dis-appointment to believe that he has but played with our misfortunes in order to manufacture personal political cap-ital. I do not now pretend to say that such is the case, but I do say that the time has passed when Mor-ton's resolution can be passed in the Senate, and that his delay in pressing it at the opportune time is unexplain-ed and altogether strange. The de-feat of Pinchback has not only greatly hurt Morton in the Senate, where he was Pinch's champion, but it is said it has discouraged him from further championship of Southern Republic-ans.

I suppose the Convention which meets on the 30th will feel, as do Re-publicans here, profoundly conscious of the dangers and the exigencies of the hour, and uncertain of the choice which wisdom shall dictate; and will, therefore, send only the best men of the party to Cincinnati, and, of course, at this early day, uninstructed.

Thirty-one investigations are now on foot under the management of the House of Representatives, and we are bold to say that every one of them will strengthen the Republican party with the country. They show generally the excellence of its public service, and if cases of individual wrong doing are found, the party will be found promt to punish and expel. Have you heard from New Hampshire?

The Republican victory in New Hampshire is complete and most cheering. Now for Connecticut.
