Yours of Mch. 27" recd,, and I take pleasure in promptly responding. Enclosed please find certified copy of Rept. of Com. & order of Court relative to my admission to the bar. You will find the Rept. of the Com. complimentary to an unusual degree. In connection with this matter I beg leave to call your attention to the letters of recommendation and strong endorsements on file. I suppose in the Gov's of-fice, at least they were filed with my application, from leading Dem. Lawyers and others, including Col. H. W. Walter, John W. C. Watson, Gen's. West and Walthall &c. urging my appointment. Please call the attention of the Gov's. Council to these letters as I think they will be sufficient to spike the guns

of Featherstone and his crew, and exonerate the Gov. so far as his appointment of me is concerned, for if I was not competant to discharge the duties of Chan-cellor, the Gov. had been induced to believe I was by the Dems. themselves.
