The first letter, dated February 20, 1865 and addressed to Lock E. Houston, speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, contains information from a report from the school's superintendent and a memorial from the board of trustees. The second letter, dated February 23, 1865 and addressed to William Yerger, president of the Mississippi Senate, contains Duncan's personal opinion on the state of the school and his doubts about keeping the school open.
