From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Governor Sharkey Collection. Letter from James Watts, attorney at law at Meridian, Mississippi, to Mississippi Governor William L. Sharkey, enclosing and endorsing the petition of the firm of Pope, Lloyd and Co. The enclosed petition of Pope, Lloyd and Co. asks that the tax on their business be waived. The petition further states that two of the firm's members - F. A. Pope and James Lloyd - are physically disabled as the former suffered the loss of an arm at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and the latter too suffered the loss of an arm at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
