From the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Governor Ames Collection. Letter from George Sargent at Natchez, Mississippi, to Major General A. C. Gillem, concerning the alleged murder of Sargent's father by soldiers of the garrison of Natchez in 1864. Sargent's letter was forwarded to the headquarters of the Fourth Military District at Vicksburg, Mississippi, along with a letter from Brevet Colonel N. A. M. Dudley summarizing Sargent's claims. Brevet Major John Tyler, Assistant Adjutant General for the Fourth Military District, forwarded Sargent's letter first to Judge James M. Smiley and later to Mississippi Governor Adelbert Ames along with a letter from Tyler summarizing Smiley's recommendation that the alleged murderers be arrested.
