Alcorn, stating that Burwell has been taxed to the point of destitution. Burwell asks Alcorn for his assistance under compromise. Included is a note from H. F. Hewson, private secretary to Alcorn, giving an executive summary of Burwell's letter. (Hewson's note appears to give the date of the letter as March 3, 1871. This may be an error, as Burwell's actual letter bears the date March 3, 1870).
