Alcorn, informing Alcorn of the assault on Representative Coggeshall, who had been approached by three men from Oakland, Mississippi, and subsequently shot. Stanley also reports that the assailants had been allowed by a justice of the peace to escape. Included is a note from H. F. Hewson, Alcorn's private secretary, giving a summary of Stanley's letter.
