CWRGM Educators

Kari Baker teaches eight grade American History at North Pike Middle School in Summit, MS. She also taught in the McComb, MS school district for eleven years. Baker has an associate's degree from Copiah-Lincoln Community College and a B.A. from the University of Southern Mississippi. She co-authored CWRGM’s “Women’s Dissent on the Confederate Home Front” lesson plans.

As a Curriculum Specialist with the Rankin County School District in Brandon, MS, In this capacity, Catherine Beasley works closely with teachers and administrators to enhance social studies instruction throughout the schools in the district. Beasley has worked as a teacher at the middle and high school levels. She holds a B.A. in History from the University of Southern Mississippi and a M.A. in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. Beasley co-authored CWRGM’s “Rebuilding the South: Early Reconstruction in Mississippi” lesson plans.

Drew Gardner is the Curator of Education at the Two Mississippi Museums. Prior to that, he spent seven years in education, the last four years teaching elementary and middle school history at The Redeemer's School in Jackson, Mississippi. As of 2021, Gardner is pursuing a M.A. in History at Jackson State University where his research focuses on the intersectionality of race and religion in Mississippi. He's published lesson plans for Mississippi History Now and co-authored CWRGM’s “Secession in Mississippi” lesson plans.

Frances Kalusche has twenty-eight years teaching and coaching experience at St Joseph Catholic High School (Madison, MS,) McComb High School, and North Pike High School. They have coached cross country, track, and soccer. They are a graduate of Mississippi State University (B.B.A.), Millsaps College (B.L.S in History), and William Carey University (Masters of Secondary Education) and possess National Board Certification in Social Studies. Kalusche co-authored CWRGM’s “Mississippi Governor’s Office, Soldiers, and the Military Experience” lesson plans.

Entering her thirteenth year as an educator in Mississippi Public Schools, Skye Morgan is a junior and senior high school history teacher at Petal High School and recipient of the 2022 Mississippi Teacher of the Year Award. Morgan’s philosophy of education centers around the belief that quality education is critical in the development of young minds to learn tolerance, critical thinking, and teamwork. Skye co-authored CWRGM’s “Native American Sovereignty during the Civil War” lesson plans.

Senior Associate Editor of CWRGM, Dr. Lindsey R. Peterson holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Southern Mississippi, M.A. in history from the University of South Dakota, and a B.A. in history from Buena Vista University in Iowa. The University of Sioux Falls awarded her a Part-Time Faculty Honor Award for teaching excellence in 2022 and her chapter, “Social Inclusion in U.S. History Survey Courses” was featured in Teaching Gradually: Practical Pedagogy for Graduate Students, by Graduate Students (Sterling, VA: Stylus, 2021). Dr. Peterson co-authored CWRGM’s “Women’s Dissent on the Confederate Home Front,” “Rebuilding the South: Early Reconstruction in Mississippi,” “Secession in Mississippi,” “Mississippi Governor’s Office, Soldiers, and the Military Experience,” “Native American Sovereignty during the Civil War,” “Immigration in the Civil War South,” “Confederate Desertion & the American Civil War,” “Memory and Commemoration,” “Slavery, the Draft, and War in Civil War-Era Mississippi,” “The Emancipation Proclamation: Evolving Freedom in Wartime Mississippi,” and “Mississippi Convict Leasing during the American Civil War & Reconstruction”, and "Exploring Data in Digital Editions" lesson plans.

Al Wheat is a seven-year classroom educator in Mississippi Public Schools. Al now serves as Director of Education for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. He co-authored the “Immigration in the Civil War South,” “Confederate Desertion & the American Civil War,” and “Memory and Commemoration” lesson plans.

Also known as Akili Nzuri, Jerid P. Wood is a writer, higher education technology leader, and Ph.D. candidate finishing his dissertation in the University of Southern Mississippi’s Higher Education Ph.D. program. He holds an M.A. in Teaching and taught Language Arts for six years at Hattiesburg High School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He has worked for the technology education company Galvanize, Inc. since June 2022. Woods co-authored CWRGM’s “Slavery, the Draft, and War in Civil War-Era Mississippi,” “The Emancipation Proclamation: Evolving Freedom in Wartime Mississippi,” and “Mississippi Convict Leasing during the American Civil War & Reconstruction” lesson plans.
