About the Documents

All of the Mississippi's governors' Correspondence and Papers, Military Telegrams, Letters and Petitions, and Executive Journals from late-1859-1882 are included in this comprehensive digital documentary edition. That includes nine administrations and eight governors (one served twice). The only items eliminated from this otherwise comprehensive project are duplicate documents such as copies of letters and receipts that comprise an estimated one percent of the entire collection.

All original CWRGM documents are housed at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, and digitized document files and verified metadata are hosted by the Mississippi Digital Library. All metadata, transcription, tagging, and annotation creation and review is conducted by volunteers (transcription creation only) and a team of trained graduate students and undergraduate students from Mississippi colleges, universities, and community colleges, and the University of South Dakota, as well as our staff.

In the Browse Documents page of this site, users can explore all available documents that have been digitized, transcribed, and annotated. Under Browse the Archive users can explore all digitized documents by series, box, and folder, much like researchers would in an archival reading room. Finally, under Explore by Topic, users will find ways to access the collection by topic.
