The 3rd Regiment, New York Cavalry (Union), also known as the Van Alen Cavalry and the Mix Cavalry, was organized on July 17, 1861 in Washington, D. C. under the command of Col. James H. Van Alen and served in the Eastern Theater. It was later commanded by Cols. Simon H. Mix and George W. Lewis. The 128th Regiment, New York Infantry (Union), also known as the National Volunteers and the National Monitors was organized on September 4, 1862 in Hudson, Columbia County, New York under the command of Col. David S. Cowles and served in the Eastern and Western theaters in the Middle Department, the Army of the Ohio, and the Department of the Gulf.
