The 1st Regiment, Mississippi Partisan Rangers (Confederate) was organized July 1862 in Tippah County, Mississippi under the command of Col. William C. Falkner and served in the Western Theater under McCulloch's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It was later commanded by Col. Samuel M. Hyams, Jr. and Lt. Col. Lawson B. Hovis. It was temporarily disbanded on November 15, 1862, reorganized on March 1, 1863, and re-designated as 7th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry on August 1, 1864 by Special Order 169.
